Fish is an essential source of animal proteins for lower middle-class society because of the affordable price. Global fish production is estimated to have reached about 179 million tonnes In 2018, 156 million tonnes ended up on our plates. Most growth in production from the sector as a whole has been from aquaculture, rising 527% from 1990 to 2018 (FAO, 2020). Aquaculture is expanding faster than any other animal-based farming sector worldwide. World aquaculture production has been dominated by Asia, and Indonesia is the second-largest aquaculture producer in the world with around 30 million ponds and 3.3 million fish farmers. With the potential, the future for the fishery industry in Indonesia may lie in aquaculture.
Despite the opportunities, there are many challenges that every fish farmer encounters in the aquaculture value chain from upstream to downstream. From the input chain, feeding is the biggest pain point for the farmers. Feeding costs around 70% of the total cost and it is currently done by manual labour which is inefficient. Besides, many fish farmers lack information and access to the market and financing. So, the inefficiency of the farming process and limited access can lead to low income earned by farmers.
